Main Street Moments: Patti Greek on 29 Years Downtown

A Legacy of Small‑Town Retail

For nearly three decades, Greek’s Bearing Gifts has been a cornerstone of downtown Athens. Owner Patti Greek and her husband, Jim, first opened their doors in 1996 after investing their life savings into a small gift shop they transformed into the beloved store it is today.

“We took our life savings, put it into our building, and we are so grateful for all the people that have supported us all these years,” Patti shared.

Now beginning their 29th year, the Greeks continue to embody the heart of community retail—offering both high‑quality products and a shopping experience filled with personal touches.

The Early Days and the Rise of Main Street Athens

When Patti first arrived in Athens, she quickly became involved with the Downtown Business Association (DBA). By 2014, she was among the business leaders who helped transition Athens into the Main Street program, a statewide initiative designed to revitalize historic downtowns.

“We wanted to go forward. We wanted more grants to help the facades, because not all small business owners can afford to repaint their building or do new siding,” she explained. “It’s almost like, if you build it, they will come. People want to see something fresh downtown.”

Her dedication, alongside many others, helped Athens secure more opportunities for growth and beautification, making the downtown district a destination for both locals and visitors.

Athens: The Best of Both Worlds

Patti describes Athens as a “best‑kept secret,” nestled between Knoxville and Chattanooga. “We’re 45 minutes away from both cities, but without the traffic problems. We have great schools, a thriving art center, a regional park, and even destination weddings happening downtown,” she noted.

With its vibrant festivals, historic courthouse, and small‑town charm paired with big‑city accessibility, Athens continues to thrive as a community hub.

The Special Touch: Gift Wrapping and Customer Care

One hallmark of Greek’s Bearing Gifts is its complimentary gift wrapping, offered year‑round. Patti believes every customer should feel proud of the gift they purchase, no matter the price.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s $2.50 or $250—we want you to be proud of the gift when you walk out the door,” she said.

This special touch, combined with decades of customer loyalty, has made the shop a trusted name in East Tennessee.

Greek’s Bearing Gifts offers a thoughtfully curated collection of gifts, homeware, and fashion. Customer favorites include:

The Annual Summer Sale: August 7

Shoppers looking for the best deals of the year won’t want to miss Greek’s Bearing Gifts’ annual summer sale on Thursday, August 7, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The event transforms the store into a lively celebration. Patti explained, “We take things that are not usually on sale and move them onto big, long tables down the center of the store. People are happy because everything’s at 50% off. It’s like a party all day long.”

Patti recalls past sales where customers lined up with boxes before the doors even opened. If you want the best finds, plan to arrive early.

A Community Pillar for Nearly 30 Years

From leading the charge in Main Street Athens to offering unbeatable customer service, Patti Greek has helped shape the character of Athens.

“We’ve had a ball ever since we opened,” Patti reflected. “And we are so thankful for the people of Athens and beyond who continue to support us.”
