Athens Arts Center: A Canvas for Community, Culture, and Creativity
Athens Arts Center: A Canvas for Community, Culture, and Creativity
From Childhood Inspiration to Leadership
Lauren’s connection to the Arts Center is more than professional—it’s personal. Her parents helped establish the center, and her godmother, Ellen Kimball, led it for 25 years. After time spent studying and working in cities like Charlotte, Chattanooga, and New York, Lauren returned home in 2013 to lead the organization that helped shape her childhood.
“It’s a dream,” she says. “Coming back to this place and being able to pour into it the same way it poured into me as a kid.”
The Art of Directing
No two days look alike for Lauren. One day she’s finalizing budget plans or writing grants; the next, she’s in costume leading a youth theater camp as a Montessori educator. Whether she’s negotiating contracts or prepping for professional performers, her focus remains the same: being a good steward of the Arts Center’s mission and ensuring its long-term sustainability.
More Than Just a Stage
The Athens Arts Center offers something truly unique: a space where community theater, professional concerts, art exhibits, competitions, and educational programs all live under one roof. According to Lauren, no other organization in the region offers this breadth of programming.
Their newly completed five-year expansion project not only increased space and curb appeal—it helped draw in new faces from all over McMinn and surrounding counties. A striking new mural outside the building now serves as a visual invitation to explore what’s inside.
Upcoming Highlights
This season, the center is kicking off its performance lineup with a community production of Matilda in August, followed by The Mouse Trap and a revival of Annie. On the music side, the House Blend Concert Series—a volunteer-led showcase of regional talent—launches August 8 with a night of unforgettable duets.
For younger creatives, the Arts Center hosts summer camps like the Kids Arts Camp and Youth Theater Camp, offering students hands-on experiences in acting, design, and teamwork.
Who Shows Up—and Why
While the Arts Center has long drawn visitors from beyond McMinn County, Lauren is excited to see local participation on the rise. “People are coming back,” she says. “They’re seeing this as their space again.”
And with table reads, drop-in volunteer hours, and after-school programming in the works, there are more ways than ever to get involved. Whether you’re a seasoned performer or stepping into the arts for the first time, the center makes it easy to find your place.
A Place Where Art Connects
One of Lauren’s favorite pieces in the Arts Center is a painting by her mother—symbolic of the center’s legacy and its mission. “It reminds me why we do this,” she says. “To bring people together through creativity.”
From hosting national acts like St. Paul and the Broken Bones to celebrating spontaneous audience moments with artists like Amanda Shires, the center has built a reputation for unforgettable experiences.
How to Get Involved
Want to be part of the Athens art movement? Visit the Arts Center’s website, stop by during office hours, or follow them on social media to keep up with events, classes, and volunteer opportunities.
As Lauren puts it, “The best way to understand what we do is just to walk through the doors.”
