Folk Art

Folk art encompasses all types of visual art including painting, sculpture, woodcarving, weaving, and pottery. Historically, creators of folk art are often untrained or self-taught artisans with varying degrees of skill and education. Form and function are brought together to create objects that are both decorative and utilitarian. The handmade nature of folk art gives each item a unique one-of-a-kind appearance as opposed to something that is mass-produced.

This exhibit, located on the lower level, showcases artwork from several local artists including Johnny McGrew, Becky McGrew, Elaine Cathcart, Jack Campbell, and George McCollum. From wood carved figurines to handwoven baskets, each item in the Museum’s folk art collection represents the past and present cultural heritage of McMinn County.
